For the audiophile community, quality sound is an investment in unfiltered human emotion. For the last eight decades, Sennheiser has understood that pursuit better than most - not just catering to audiophiles, but helping define the reference standard by which the industry judges acoustic experiences.
That audiophile audience, in turn, has little patience for the shortcuts of disposable tech. Artificially boosted bass, flattering audio tricks, or anything that compromises the integrity of a recording simply won’t do.
Jared Toops, Head of Ecommerce, Americas at Sennheiser Consumer Hearing (Sonova Group), knows this customer inside and out. Having grown the company’s D2C businesses globally, he understands that winning over audiophiles starts with an obsession over the smallest details. As he succinctly put it in a conversation with our team:
“This is a customer who absolutely refuses to compromise on audio integrity. They want the clearest, most authentic representation of a musical track: the slide of a finger down a guitar string, every layer of percussion, and every octave of every vocal.”
Sustaining that same devotion to long-lasting hardware is what sets Sennheiser apart in an era when much of the industry is built around the next sale. For Sennheiser, achieving acoustic perfection is only half the promise. The other half is protecting the trust customers place in a high-ticket product long after it leaves the box. And Sennheiser has found a way to ace that trust.
So, read on to discover how that trust extends beyond checkout, with product protection becoming a core part of how customers experience ownership.
In the late 1990s, Sennheiser introduced the HD 600 headphones. And even now, nearly three decades later, the original owners still plug those exact pairs in daily, needing nothing more than an occasional set of replacement earpads.
For most audiophiles, it’s the gold standard. That built-in permanence also allows the brand to command a price premium over market rivals till date.
Wireless hardware, though, lives by a different set of physical rules than wired equipment.
Bluetooth earbuds, noise-cancelling headphones, and soundbars all rely on micro-lithium batteries and digital chips. Those components have a natural service life, which makes eventual servicing a question of when rather than if.
Jared summed up that reality in one simple sentence:
“When you're in consumer electronics, things break.”
For a customer with premium wireless gear sitting in their cart, those two realities collide. They expect years of flawless performance, and they want to know how that performance stays protected once the manufacturer’s coverage period ends.
“Warranty expiration of any kind creates anxiety, especially when you’re spending four, five, six hundred, sometimes over $1,000 on headphones,” says Jared.
At checkout, answering that question is often what moves a high-ticket purchase forward.
The same question surfaced after the sale. When a product needed service just weeks past its warranty, Sennheiser's support reps would spend an hour or two on the phone with customers, wanting to offer more than the standard warranty terms allowed.
Closing that single gap stood to improve the experience on both sides of the sale.
So, Jared and his team reached a simple conclusion: Sennheiser needed a modern extended warranty partner to bridge that gap.
As Jared says- “Control the controllables, right?”.
Sennheiser’s requirements called for a long-term partner - one who could uphold an 80-year legacy while creating effortless workflows for customers and internal teams alike.
“We were on the search for, I want to say about a year before we got in touch with Rick and the team at SureBright,” Jared says, adding, “We had talked to a couple of other providers…it didn't work for us for a multitude of technical reasons, but also because it was complicated for the customer.”
Sennheiser’s ask was straightforward: a native, plug-and-play fit for Shopify, Sennheiser’s global storefront standard, and a partner willing to handle claims directly rather than adding a new administrative queue for their regular support staff.
SureBright cleared both, then cleared a third hurdle Jared had never formally written down: instant industry credibility.
“Before we onboarded with SureBright, one of our deciding factors really, other than the Shopify capabilities that they brought to the table, was the fact that they have a relationship with ProSource, which is one of the largest electronics buying groups in the country and the world,” says Jared. “We knew that we had a trustworthy product that our customers had seen before, and a name that they’d heard before.
When setting business expectations, SureBright estimated an attach rate between 20% and 21%, a realistic baseline Jared appreciated.
“A lot of vendors out there will quote a very pie-in-the-sky attach rate that on your best day, you might achieve,” he says. “To quote something that’s fairly conservative and be able to stick to it, if not exceed it... it's much appreciated.”
To his delight, SureBright’s real-world performance blew past those initial projections. Today, Sennheiser’s attach rates sit consistently between 28% and 31%.
“I think that's a credit to both parties doing things well,” Jared says. “It's an ethical way of doing business, and it's appreciated by the person who's responsible for building the business case and ultimately accountable for the dollars being invested.”
To keep internal teams focused on customers rather than claims administration, SureBright made sure Sennheiser’s support staff had answers to all the questions customers would have within a week of onboarding.
“One of the things that we were impressed with was... Soumya [SureBright’s Partnerships Success Lead] gave us an entire PDF resource kit for our customer service team,” Jared shared.
That single resource kit solved a problem that's easy to overlook. When a high-end pair of headphones needs attention, customers don't think about backend warranty providers or vendor contracts. They judge the brand on how quickly the first person they reach can help, which makes a single, confident answer part of the Sennheiser experience.
By equipping front-line agents with clear, instant answers, SureBright helped protect the ownership experience at the moment it matters most.
Sennheiser then integrated coverage naturally across the sales journey:
“After the sale, we've said, 'Hey look, you don't have to make the decision right now,'” Jared explains. Instead, Sennheiser waits until the product has been delivered before reaching out.
“When that customer opens that box, it triggers an email, essentially from the delivery scan that says, 'Hey, here's how to get set up. And by the way, if you want to add extended coverage, you can still do that.'”
Consistent and robust attach rates quickly translated into measurable business results. Within twelve months of launch, Sennheiser’s average order value increased.
“When you're shipping more than 10,000 orders, a $4 increase in AOV becomes a significant source of revenue,” Jared shared.
The returns data proved just as telling. Over the same twelve-month period, category-wide returns fell 26% year over year.
“SureBright is certainly a main driver of that,” Jared highlights.
For a premium brand, returns are usually about certainty rather than the hardware itself. When customers know there’s a clear path to support down the line, they’re far more likely to keep the product they chose.
That confidence extends beyond returns. It also means a repair that falls outside the manufacturer’s window has a clear path to resolution long before it reaches a review page.
“You never know which negative review is going to be read, and you certainly don't need it to be over something that was preventable by an extended warranty,” Jared notes.
When asked what advice he would give another brand navigating the warranty decision, Jared boils a year of searching down to two core criteria:
“Choosing a merchant that has deep Shopify knowledge and the ability to be a quick collaborator, number one,” he says. “Number two, understanding, when they’re shopping vendors, can that vendor adopt my brand's language and create trust with my customers?”
Sennheiser already knew how to engineer exceptional sound. What it needed from SureBright was a partner that could protect the trust behind it. Together, they turned product protection into an extension of the ownership experience - one that gave customers confidence at checkout and after it, and helped drive attach rates past 29%.
