ResTech Today featured SureBright CEO Manish Chauhan's insights on custom installation's evolving landscape

Whole-system warranties help custom integrators reduce service costs, simplify claims, and create a new recurring revenue opportunity.

When you work in the product protection business long enough, you eventually take Murphy’s Law to heart. Anything that can go wrong eventually will. But what will take you longer to understand is how much that law costs the people who deliver exceptionally great work but have to answer for the failure anyway. Custom installers, mostly.

We used to work with an installer named Mark. Eight months after wiring a client’s home theater and whole-home audio, the system he installed started cutting out. Mark spent three service visits ruling things out one by one. There was the receiver, then the in-wall wiring, then a firmware conflict between two components from different manufacturers.

Four hours of diagnostic labor before he even identified the problem, and none of it was billable. The client assumed this was covered under something. It wasn’t, not cleanly.

Each component had a different warranty from a different company, with different coverage and a different claims process. Nothing in either warranty accounted for the possibility that the interaction between the two products was the actual problem. Mark had to absorb the cost of figuring that out.

Like most custom installers, he never recovered those hours or the money he lost repairing the system.

Observing him taught us an important lesson. Diagnosing a multi-component failure takes real expertise, time, and effort. Yet almost none of that work is reimbursed by the manufacturers whose products are involved. The installer becomes the de facto warranty department for a system nobody designed to support as a whole.

A Better Way to Protect the Entire System

That’s the exact problem a whole-system warranty is built to solve. Instead of a client juggling multiple manufacturer warranties, they have one plan covering the entire installation. The diagnostic work that once represented financial risk for the installer becomes a covered, billable service. There’s no longer a question about whose responsibility it is.

There’s also a compelling business case. A whole-system warranty creates an additional revenue stream separate from the installation itself. It’s sold at the point of sale and doesn’t require new staff or additional services to support.

We’ve seen merchants offering similar product protection programs convert roughly 20% of eligible sales on average. Higher-priced products and customers making larger investments often produce even stronger attachment rates. Setup takes about 10 minutes with virtually no ongoing overhead, which is why more than 500 merchant brands have integrated SureBright warranties into their sales process. SureBright brings that same approach to custom integration businesses.

The Question Every Installer Should Ask

Murphy’s Law has endured for nearly 80 years because it continues to prove itself true. Something will eventually fail.

The real question is much simpler.

When the system you installed does fail, who should pay to find out why?
